Bunnings Pest Control Product Reviews in Sydney NSW
Reviews of Bunnings pest control, Bunnings termite treatment, rat traps, mice traps, termite baits and cockroach gel. Which of their pest control products are the best and which are the ones to avoid?
Bruce Gow of A1 Pest Control arrives at the front of Bunnings Castle Hill NSW. He explains how he is about to review pest control products that are on sale at Bunnings to see whether they are up to scratch from a professional point of view.
In general, most of their pest control products and pesticides in Bunnings are pretty good. However, Bunnings termite treatment is NOT recommended. Find out why below and check out their reviews on their own website.
Bunnings Rat Traps
In particular many of their rat traps and mice traps are very effective. One of the exceptions was this one by Ratsak:
As a professional pest controller of over 40 years experience, I would not say the same of their rodent control products that are ultrasonic pest repellers.
Here are some reviews of one of these products: Productreview.com.au The Big Cheese Advanced Pest Repeller
The video below is NOT representing “The Big Cheese Advanced Pest Repeller”, but it gives you a pretty good idea whether ultrasonic rodent repellers actually work.
I will set up my own experiments soon, so please bookmark or link to this page if you would like to see something like this in the near future. Don’t get me wrong. A Bunning mouse trap will probably be ok if you just have an occasional mouse.
Electronic Pest Repellers
Beware of these claims about electronic and ultrasonic rodent repellers, rat traps and mouse traps:
“24 hour home protection from rodent pests”
“Poison free way to rid rats and mice”
“Protects rooms and also stops nesting in walls, ceilings and under floors”
Don’t be misled by any ultrasonic pest repeller – Bunnings should not sell these to the unsuspecting public.
They tend to have very little or no scientific evidence backing them up and rely instead on purely anecdotal evidence in my opinion. Pestrol rodent free Bunnings is one to avoid.
If you see “ultrasonic animal repeller Bunnings” or “ultrasonic rat repellent Bunnings”
Don’t bother and keep you hand in your pocket. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_pest_control
If the manufacturers of these type of products have verifiable scientific evidence that I am not aware of, please contact me via email and I will post your evidence on this page as a retraction.
I would LOVE to see a video of starving rats and mice being driven away from food and water by a non-toxic gadget. I would have them on all of my vans if there was some verifiable evidence. Sadly I haven’t seen anything of the sort from Pestrol rodent free or anywhere else.
Don’t take my word for it though! See:
ACCC media release on Danoz refund offer to buyers of electronic pest repellents
USA – FTC warns manufacturers and retailers about ultrasonic pest control
FTC alleges electronic mosquito repellent claims are false
On the positive side, a Pest Free representative posted this comment on Whirlpool: “Plug-In Pest Free is proud to be the only product on the Australian and a world market which has been fully scientifically tested in a leading Australian University by an Emeritus Professor and consumer tested and proven for 15 YEARS!!” Source: https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1347137
On the negative side, this is what AEPMA’s Industry Code of Best Practice for Rodent Management says about Pestrol and Ultrasonic/electromagnetic devices.
“14.6 Ultrasonic Devices
Ultrasonic/electromagnetic devices are widely sold, though it is reported in several peer-
reviewed, scientific papers that there is “little or no success” when using these devices [14, 46,
60]. In 2001, the US Federal Trade Commission advised over 400 retailers of the risks of making
fraudulent claims about ultrasonic/electromagnetic devices having any effect on rodents [61].
This Code does not recommend use of these devices. Source: http://aepma.com.au/Resources/PageContent/Files/dc1ff8cd-f0af-4755-89f4-bcb309353ef8.pdf
Bunnings Pesticides and Rat Traps Reviews
The Big Cheese Electronic mouse killer isn’t an ultrasonic sound trap which lacks evidence of efficient killing of rats. These electronic traps physically electrocute the rodent resulting in death. They can kill up to 100 mice according to the instructions.
Another product produced by Big Cheese is their Multi mouse catcher. They are a sturdy looking trap made of galvanised steel. The clear lid allows for easy inspection and they can trap up to 10 mice at a time. You would typically need to check this type of trap at least once a day if you have a major rodent infestation.
Bunnings Termite Treatment
Superway White Ant Termite Bait
As a professional pest manager, I can’t recommend this product for many reasons. The main reason is that unless the consumer has been educated on termite biology, safe termite control and termite bait systems, then they will likely fail.

Termites just didn’t eat it. I paid $100 for 12 flimsy plastic containers with some wood in them. After waiting two months for the termites to go into the traps, then I paid $69 for some powder, I followed the instructions precisely however the termites did not go anywhere near the termite bait. I ended up calling a professional in and he advised me that a good termite bait Is palatable however the cheap termite bait can have impurities and they don’t eat it.

The series of negative reviews here that seem to be made in the same week look like they are made my pest controllers that don’t want you to buy these. These may be a bit more flimsy than popular brands but they work in the
exact same principle. Termites do not know one brand from another. All these systems work in the exact same way and none of them are 100% effective. Very important to inspect them every 2-3 months and have some bait ready. Best to use gloves so you don’t introduce smells that might pit termites off. Had a pest company to manage my ‘professional’ system and were really ripping me off and didn’t even check the stations them properly. Over the years I’m literally saving thousands of dollars to monitor myself and at least I know I am monitoring them properly. Go for it. At this price you can’t go wrong.

- I recommend this product.

Cockroach Baiting Products
Video Transcript: “This cockroach gel is using one of the products that we use. Its active ingredient or the active constituent is Fipronil. That will kill most common cockroaches and German cockroaches, but you really need to use several different strategies.
You won’t do it just with a tube of this, but it’s a good start. We use the gel, a spray, a dust and traps to get the best result.
Because we do it from several different strategies.
…but, uh yeah I would recommend this cockroach gel because it’s only $8.98 and will last a fair while.”
Transcript: “These termite bait stations we probably wouldn’t recommend because there are so many variables in controlling termites.
You really need a good idea from a pest control perspective on how to treat them. You need to take into account biology, how much bait you’re going to use where you’re going to place it and where the termites are.
And if they’re underneath your house, there’s no use putting in bait stations around the outside of the house and I definitely wouldn’t recommend that you put them underneath the house.
You need a termite barrier done. So there’s a lot of circumstances of these where they don’t work.
I’m not saying that they won’t work at all, but I’d probably stay away from getting any version of termite baits sold in the hardware stores.
So it’s Bruce from A1 Pest Control at Bunnings.” If you are looking for “Termite Treatment Bunnings” I would look elsewhere.
Transcript: “Okay so we’ve been called to this property and the clients attempted termite baiting himself a couple of years ago.
He’s had termites two or three times before at this property around different areas. He’s noticed in the back of his property on the upper level but the flooring starting to get soft, the window frames are soft so there’s definitely signs of termites up in there ,so let’s jump in let’s go up the back of the subfloor and let’s take a look at what’s going on in this home.
Now he’s bought himself termite baits and the baits he bought are basically a piece of pvc pipe with a bit of wood in them.
So what he’s done is he’s put them under the house which is a big mistake. Secondly he’s never checked them and because it’s wood.
They’ve basically used this pipe and the bit of wood as a bridge into his house.
The termites have been attracted to the nice bit of pine that they had in there and they’ve just made a basically a super highway straight into his house.
He hasn’t been under here for six months he called us up and he said, “oh look I’ve had a termite issue I’ve tried to deal with it myself and now all our flooring’s soft and I want to get a professional opinion.”
So we’ve came out, we’ve got under the house and this is what we’ve found, so a good example of leaving termite control to the professionals.
It’s important it’s done right.
There’s all different types of termites some prefer hard wood some prefer soft wood termite baits, work very very differently.
They’re not all the same so if you’re concerned about termites. My best advice is do it right and call in a professional and here’s a perfect example why.”
Bunnings Pest XPert “Long Reach” Wasp Spray
Don’t be fooled with this one! This is definitely not long reach, it had a pitiful range. It was ineffectual, didn’t last very long and dangerous if used in even a slight breeze.
The diagram on the wasp jet container below was very deceptive IMO.
The spray can hardly reach even the lowest spots on this diagram.
It was also expensive, as it is around $20 and only lasts a short while, not even lasting more that one small nest if you were able to get to it.
About the only good thing about it was the lock button, it was easy to use.
Bunnings Kordon Termite Barrier Review
Bunnings doesn’t sell this great product or an alternative. Go to their website https://kordon.net/kordon-termite-barrier/ for a list of where to buy a Kordon termite barrier roll (installers only). Here is a summary of how it works:
How Kordon Safeguards Your Property:
Discover the advanced technology behind Kordon, a cutting-edge termite protection system designed to ensure the long-lasting integrity of your building. At the heart of Kordon lies deltamethrin, a potent synthetic pyrethroid that spells doom for any termite attempting to breach its defenses. The fibrous webbing, expertly infused with deltamethrin, forms an impenetrable barrier laminated on both sides for maximum efficacy.
But Kordon is not just about stopping termites in their tracks – it goes a step further with a powerful termite repellent effect. Termites instinctively shy away from the Kordon barrier, minimizing the chances of an infestation. Picture a shield that not only fends off attacks but deters them altogether.
The technology doesn’t stop there – the uppermost layer boasts a 200-micron orange plastic shield, creating a moisture vapor barrier that enhances Kordon’s overall performance. On the flip side, a bottom black plastic layer encapsulates and fortifies the termite barrier, ensuring comprehensive protection for your property.
Kordon is more than a product; it’s a certified building solution approved for use in areas where traditional soil termiticide treatments are restricted. Recognized by the Australian Building Codes Board and certified as ‘allergen-free’ construction material, Kordon ensures your property meets the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Warranty Assurance:
Backed by rigorous testing from Bayer and independent authorities, Kordon comes with an impressive assurance – a lifespan of over 50 years, aligning with the commercial life of your building. The protection doesn’t end there – opt for a certified Kordon installer, and you’ll enjoy a 10-year $100,000 structural timber replacement warranty against termite penetration.
When your building project is complete, rest easy with a comprehensive set of documentation provided by Bayer and your accredited installer. This includes the Kordon 10-year Warranty, a Certificate of Compliance to Australian Standard 3660.1-2000, and the manufacturer’s specifications. Track the precise installation details with an Installation Report and keep tabs on regular inspections through the Annual Inspection Sticker.
“Choose Kordon – where cutting-edge technology meets unwavering protection for your property, ensuring peace of mind for decades to come.”
This “Richgro” cockroach gel seems promising, as it uses Fipronil as the active constituent. This what professional pest firms such as ourselves use. I haven’t tested this in the field yet, but after I do I will post the results here for your perusal.
Don’t be mislead in thinking that it will instantly cure you of your massive cockroach infestation. It won’t.
You will need to use lots of other strategies including, but not limited to these ones:
- Sticky bait traps with lures
- Low toxic non-fuming spray that is non-repellent
- Low toxic dust for crack and crevice treatment
- Insect bombs with Insect Growth Regulator (IGR)
Although these products are a great first line of attack, it’s very easy for a German Cockroach infestation to get out of control.
If you leave it too late it may require professional treatment.
This is because cockroaches, particularly German cockroaches breed very rapidly. Just one female may lay 40 eggs every two months, which can incubate in as little as 25 days. If you see roaches in the daylight hours, then you are in big trouble. This is because they prefer to remain hidden in the day time, coming out only at night when it is safe from being trodden on by irritated humans.
Female cockroaches have been known to live up to 2 years.
We utilise the latest baits and insecticides that are safe for you and your family.
Insect pests don’t have a chance, as they have yet to build a resistance against our superior products.
Combined with our knowledge and experience, we are able to create a management plan that will control the infestation economically, quickly and effectively.
Visit our cockroach control Sydney management page for more details.
Ant Identification
ants are social insects which live in nests. They have several ‘castes’ with specific duties for the survival of the colony. For this reason they are often confused with termites, but the two groups have very little in common apart from their size and social behaviour.
Ants feed on a wide range of foods, from those found in homes to the sugary excretions from plant bugs. they are the most frequently encountered insects in and around the average home.
Ants are considered a nuisance pest in the home as they enter from outside in the garden and make their way to the food handling facilities. depending on the species of ant their nests are made under paths, wall cavities, in pot plants, sub floor areas and in roof cavities. Ants can also carry disease organisms. Certain species are attracted to dog fecal matter and to other waste products in garbage containing organisms that cause dysentry or pathogenic bacteria such as salmonella.
Features and Life Cycle
Most species of ants have three distinct body segments (the head, thorax and abdomen), elbowed antennae and a constriction of body segments between the thorax and abdomen. If wings are present the forewings are larger than the hindwings.
There are four stages in the life cycle of ants is:
Egg: are soft, oval and tiny. About the size of a period at the end of a sentence. Not all eggs are destined to become adults, some are eaten by nest mates for extra nourishment.
Larva: The Larvae which hatch from the eggs are fed by the adults
Pupa: is a resting stage before transforming into an adult
Adult: A Colony consists of a queen , a king that dies soon after fertilising the queen and workers. The workers which are sterile females, are the most abundant caste and their duties include defence, food collection, feeding the other castes and nest construction. some workers with large heads are known as soldiers.
the queen produces eggs which develop into the various castes. swarms of winged mature male and female ants annually leave to establish new colonies as well as some females and workers may leave a parent colony to set up new colonies, this is referred to as budding off.
the worker ants seek food and when located the information is communicated to the rest of the colony. This is done inn several ways, including trail marking by pheromone secretions and taste. Ants are also predatory, preying on other insects, particularly termites in some ant species. Many people say ‘an ant has bitten me’ but they are technically not correct, a bite is done with the jaws but ants that cause pain usually do so with a sting.

Termite Inspection
The threats of a termite invasion are very real. On average, 1 in 3 homes in Sydney will suffer considerable damage due to a termite infestation, and almost 60% of all properties in Sydney will at one point have a termite problem.
The only way to protect against a termite infestation is a routine termite inspection by professionals. Termite colonies are notoriously difficult to spot and might cause substantial damage before being discovered. A routine termite examination every 12 months is important for keeping your house termite-free. In high-risk areas examinations should happen each 6 months.
When is the last time you checked your property or organisation for termites?
Trained specialists at A1 Pest Control specialize in termite control and inspections. Our team even perform thermal termite assessments. Give us a call, and we will be happy to discuss your unique circumstance. Remember, prevention is the best termite control option.
