How many termite species are there in Australia?

Of around three hundred species of termite in Australia, only about twenty are of economic importance in there own regions.

There are 3 main groups of structural timber destroying termites in Australia:

Subterranean, Drywood, & Dampwood termites

Dampwood termites belong to the family Kalotermitidae. These termites live inside the wood they eat and are rarely encountered in domestic homes.

Subterranean termites (families Rhinotermitidae and Termitidae) are much more common in urban areas, usually live in the soil & randomly forage for wood to eat.

Differences between ants and termites

Porotermes adamsoni soldier caste
Soldier body length: 10mm – 14mm

Distribution
Occurring east coast of Australia from south east Queensland, along New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania

Nesting Sites
They are found in damp decaying logs, tree stumps. The soldiers have a rectangular shaped head & short-toothed mandibles about 1/3 of the head length. This species of termite require rotting and decayed wood to start a new colony and aren’t a real serious pest of homes, but it is possible that they could attack a building if there were decayed or rotting wood in the first place.

They can be controlled simply by removing the nest from the tree, post or pole and treating the same with insecticide.

There are 4 different castes of adults for Porotermes adamsoni termites.
